![]() Our Souls at Night is published by Picador (£7.99). “Makes me think there might be hope for somebody else in this life,” Addie and Louis are told by an old farmer. Unkindness pushes them apart, but the sentiment that lingers most, on finishing this beautiful, tranquil, tender novel, is contentment. ![]() She and Louis mend him – heal would be too affected a word for Haruf to use – with a dog and a baseball mitt and a camping trip. Addie’s sad, lonely six-year-old grandson comes to stay, abandoned by his haphazardly unkind parents. The town watches them, and approves or disapproves, depending. “It’s just two old people talking in the dark,” says Addie. Sharing their nights isn’t about sex, although it does become so, a little. The affair Louis had, and how he came back to his family. “I was feeling more interested in this than I’d felt about anything for a long time,” he says, and they spend their nights learning everything they can about each other. But Addie, at 70, isn’t worried about what the town thinks, and soon Louis isn’t either. Willingness to risk.” He comes around the back of her house on Cedar Street to make sure the neighbours don’t see, his pyjamas and toothbrush in a paper bag. “I’m not sure I can be equal to you… In courage, he said. And it all combines to make a novel which, like Louis and Addie’s relationship does for them, warms and expands the heart.Īt first, Louis is diffident about Addie’s plan. The language is straightforward and stripped back, calm and unassuming. Our Souls at Night is based on a novel by Kent Haruf. The late Kent Haruf’s final novel Our Souls at Night is set, as were his previous books, in the “little dirt-blown” Colorado town of Holt. There's a specific art to adapting a book for film. How does this movie shatter stereotypes about older folks? Why is it valuable for audiences of all ages to see a love story about two people of a certain age who are vibrant and engaged in the world around them? Why is it both heartwarming and instructive to see Jane Fonda, at 79 years of age, and Robert Redford, at 81, still able to bring a story like this one to life? ![]() What specific movie genres are your favorites? But even in their golden years, issues that affected them throughout their lives (their kids, their friendships), along with an adorable grandson (Iain Armitage) and a physical setback, complicate their newfound relationship and threaten to upset the rare relationship they're creating. It takes a little time, but Louis warms to the idea, willing to give it a try. What if they spent their nights together? Slept together? In the same bed? Simply for the companionship, the conversation, and the fact that neither would feel so terribly alone. What if.? Louis waits, not knowing what to expect, as Addie finds her way. It arrived in Venice saddled with a premise. What's more, she knows that they're both good people. Adapted from the Kent Haruf novel, Our Souls at Night is your classic Hollywood weepie, so immaculately played that it confounds crass preconceptions. They're both widowed, they have been neighbors for many years, though they don't know each other well, and, most critical, they are each alone. Summoning her courage, she makes an unusual proposal. Expect kissing, embracing, and bare shoulders, along with mild sexual innuendo in some scenes with the leading man's cronies, moderate social drinking (wine and beer), and a bit of swearing: two instances of "damn" and a "crap." With this gentle story of romance between two people in the September of their years, the duo completes a half-century of noteworthy romantic pairings, beginning in 1967 as young newlyweds in an early Neil Simon comedy, Barefoot in the Park, and delighting audiences in a memorable love story between two adults in The Electric Horseman, 1979. Many of the scenes exploring the development of their romance are set in the bedroom, without sex however, audiences can expect the ultimate answer to "will they or won't they?" treated with tenderness and restraint. Reuniting Jane Fonda and Robert Redford in a story about the relationship between a lonely widow and widower who have been longtime neighbors, the film makes the most of the two stars' appeal and cinematic integrity. ![]() Parents need to know that Our Souls at Night is based on the book by Kent Haruf. ![]()

![]() ![]() I stayed for 2 nights and had nothing but problems. Televisions are older-model tube types with very spotty analog cable. But the staff was very helpful in answering our questions. We needed to ask for an ironing board and an ice bucket, and the hours of room service. Since the hotel did not provide a book outlining all of their services, we needed to ask several questions at the front desk. Walls are somewhat thin, as we could hear conversations and television noise from a neighboring room. ![]() The valet guys are prompt and very friendly. Rooms are spacious and clean, and the staff is very helpful and friendly. As others have indicated, the hotel boasts a "beach" theme with an indigo and yellow color scheme on the walls and furnishings. The hotel is nicely situated in the city's downtown area with several restaurants and bars within walking distance. We stayed at the Indigo for a few days on a sight-seeing trip to Dallas and the surrounding areas. I'll make earlier reservations next time. That requires one to negotiate a bunch of one-way streets in order to find the way back to the actual hotel entrance.īottom line.if you must pay as much as we did, there are a number of much nicer places to stay in downtown Dallas, all of which happened to be full on the night we wanted. And, by the way, the hotel entrance in not on the street listed as the address. The lobby is small the bar was not open when we returned from our engagement, must to our chagrin, and there is not an entry ramp for parking while registering.you must stop on a busy Dallas street. The room was priced like all the rest of downtown Dallas hotels, but without their amenities. If we had gotten a bargain price for this room, I would have tolerated the downside much easier, but we did not. Everything was mostly clean and well kept the bed was comfy and the staff were friendly. The closet in our room was inconveniently in the bathroom behind the bathroom door when opened the sink area was minuscule the shower however was roomy. But, the rooms have a European feel, translate that to mean smal,l particularly the bathrooms. Paint in bright colors covers many layers of old, as does new flooring etc. Hotel indigo is an older property, newly refurbished, but there are limits to what one can do to upgrade an old downtown hotel.
![]() My personal view of which is that the use of the word ‘adorably’ feels quite specifically design-led. I’ll get into this possibility in more detail in a moment, but it’s useful first to return to the specific wording of the Brooklin Series X leak. rather than sit in addition to the current model. This second leaked document clearly indicates that the upcoming discless Xbox Series X will replace. Namely that physical media not only isn’t part of Xbox’s future plans, but actively runs counter to the brand’s future vision. There is, perhaps, a third reason why an external disc drive for the Brooklin Series X feels unlikely - and it’s the one that physical media fans fear the most. ![]() When so much else IS covered in detail in the leaks, this abject absence of information on an external disc drive seems pretty telling. Second, there’s seemingly nothing in any of the vast quantity of recently leaked documents to suggest that Xbox has any plans at all to launch an external disc drive for Brooklin Xbox Series X. First, the world has changed dramatically in terms of how people access their media since the 360 rolled into town, with a huge surge in streaming and downloading. It seems to me there are two problems with hoping for an external disc drive for the Brooklin Series X, though. Essentially the 360’s HD DVD drive let you add a better quality video drive, whereas a potential Brooklin Series X add-on disc drive would be adding physical media support where otherwise there would be none. ![]() That optional extra didn’t sell particularly well, it has to be said - but then it was something of a different, more niche proposition given that the main Xbox 360 console already had a game and DVD disc drive built in. Something the company has (admittedly now quite distant) history of doing with the HD-DVD drive it released for the Xbox 360. The Brooklin Xbox Series X’s USB-C port could potentially be used to add an external disc drive if Xbox released one. In fact, another leaked Xbox slide categorically states that the so-called Brooklin Series X will offer upgrades to the functionality of the current Series X, such as double the internal storage and improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatibility, and will mark the End Of Life for the current Series X console (which Xbox refers to in its internal documents as the ‘Starkville’ edition).Įven the wholesale replacement of the disc-carrying Xbox Series X with a discless version would not necessarily mean, though, that Xbox had given up on discs. Where this simple ‘it’s just Xbox offering another option for a different type of user’ argument falls pretty hard, though, is in the suggestion - statement, really - in Microsoft’s leaked documents to the effect that the upcoming Brooklin Series X would appear as a ‘refresh’ of the current Series X, priced at the same $500 level, rather than it being an addition to the range that might coexist with the current Series X at a slightly cheaper price point. The current Xbox Series X carries a disc drive - but how many people are actually using it? Now You: Which security extensions do you use, and why? NoScript becoming available for Chrome is major news, even though functionality is limited in comparison to Firefox at this point in time. Firefox extension ports to Chrome are rarer, but they do happen as well. Support for WebExtensions in Firefox enabled compatibility with lots of Chrome extensions and options to port extensions from the browser to Firefox easily. The main reason for that is that Chrome's extensions engine does not support certain features that Mozilla added to Firefox when it started to work on the WebExtensions switch. One of the main reasons for using NoScript, its XSS filter, is not available in the Chrome version right now. Our tip to check the NoScript whitelist section on first install still holds, as you may not want to allow connections to Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and other domains owned by these companies by default. There you find a list of allowed connections that you may want to go through to remove those that you don't want to allow. You can allow connections temporarily or permanently, and make other configuration changes in the options. A click displays connections and whether they are allowed or blocked. The extension adds an icon to the Chrome toolbar that indicates blocked content. NoScript for Chrome works just like the Firefox WebExtension version for the most part. Today's release marks a milestone for the extension the Firefox and Chrome versions of NoScript share a codebase and it is possible that support for other browsers may be added in the future. NoScript, which was launched in 2005 (just like this blog), has been turned into a cross-platform extension fourteen years after its initial release. Up until now, we have seen ports of Chrome extensions to Firefox for the most part. The organization selected WebExtensions as the new system for Firefox which, among other things, ensured compatibility (to a degree) with Chrome extensions. Mozilla paved the way for a cross-platform NoScript extension when it turned off the classic extension system in Firefox 57. Third-parties made attempts to bring NoScript functionality to Chrome, the 2010 extension release NotScript tried that for instance. A NoScript guide covering all major features in 2014, a beginner's guide in 2016, and a guide for the WebExtensions version of NoScript. We published several guides in the past years to highlight NoScript functionality and promote the extension. NoScript was a Firefox-exclusive extension for a very long time and one of the main reasons for security-conscious users to use Firefox instead of Chrome or other browsers. A stable release is planed for the end of June 2019. The Chrome extension page does not list it as such, though.
